You were treated disgustingly at the hospital, Cliff but that's not really important right now.Junkies, addicts, alcoholics..whatever you want to call them, people like you and me, are seen as a real drain on the Health Services' time and money, certainly here in the UK and as your letter indicates elsewhere. Most of them don't mean to be unkind, it's just that there is still very little education about the nature of addiction out there. At the end of the day, there isn't much they can do except wipe up the blood, save you from you next overdose etc and wait for your next appearance. I was a regular at my local Accident and Emergency five years ago - collapsing in the street, fights, overdosing, threatening suicide. Not nice memories but ones I have learned to live with.
I know what it's like in the early days, Cliff. Have you considered phoning your local Narcotics Anonymous office? You may not like the idea of the 12 Steps programme but again that's not really important right now . The person at the end of the phone knows what you're going through, can talk you through it and maybe even get somebody round to visit you. Going cold turkey alone is NOT a good idea. It's dangerous, for one. You need someone to talk to, another addict who understands. For example, if your system went into shock they would know how to deal with the physicians at your hospital. I'm not suggesting you start going to meetings or anything (although that may help) I'm just concerned about you getting through these next few days. It's early Monday am in the UK. Post back and let us all know how you are and please get help. You want to get out of this hell, you realise that you're an addict and you want out. You're halfway there already, Cliff. I can tell from your message that the guilt is weighing heavily on you and right now that isn't going to get you anywhere much. You're a good person, just a very poorly one. Look at it like that. You have an illness. An illness that it IS possible to recover from. Don't give yourself such a hard time. In the meantime, thinking of you and God bless Leighton.
