ADD Action Group

With kids heading off to school this month, I wanted to put the spotlight on ADD Action Group. They came to my attention when, Joni Granrud, a former nurse, posted an entry on the message board about them. This great organization focuses on children with learning disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Learning Differences, Hyperactivity, Dyslexia and Autism. Joni herself was recently diagnosed with ADD, at the age of 46. It was then that she realized so many children may have these disorders, but unfortunately they go misdiagnosed. Instead they are usually branded as a “problem child” and go untreated, which causes troubles that last well into adulthood. ADD Action Group wants to change that by offering assistance to parents of children who have these conditions. They realize that not all children are affected the same, and so they act as a resource center for information for alternative solutions to dealing with learning disabilities.

Here are some symptoms that are common to ADD:

  • Fails to sustain attention and is easily distracted
  • Makes careless mistakes.
  • Does not appear to listen.
  • Struggles to follow through on instructions.
  • Has difficulty with organization.
  • Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in chair.
  • Talks excessively.
  • Blurts out answers before questions have been completed.
Everyone has had at least one of these behaviors at one time or another; however, the symptoms must be more frequent or severe than in other children or adults. Also the behaviors must create significant difficulty in at least two areas of life, such as home, social settings, school, or work.
