Million Mom March

My friend Rosie O'Donnell, mother of four, is a strong supporter of tougher gun laws. She along with 750,000 people on Mother's Day this year went to Washington D.C. to ask for sensible gun laws and to remember those who have been victims of gun violence. As a Mom, I feel that this is a really serious and important issue to discuss. The foundation is asking for some solutions:

Problem: The current system requires no effective licensing system or registration for handgun buyers. Once a handgun is bought there is no tracking system.

Solution: Requiring a license to be obtained before buying a handgun and yearly registration of handguns. Failure to renew the registration would result in your license being taken away.

Problem: American's gun industry is the least regulated commercial enterprise. There are few safety features included in the gun's design.

Solution: The gun industry should have better regulation and stronger governmental monitoring. Safety features should be required like an indicator for the firing chamber, better locking devices, and a child safety grip.

Problem: Through a loophole in the law, dealers can sell guns in private sales or gun shows without first getting a background check.

Solution: Have the same state or federal restrictions that apply to buying guns in a store apply to buying guns in a gun show and/or private sale.

Problem: Those who are legal to buy a gun can buy as many as they like.

Solution: Establish a responsible limit on how many guns can be bought in a period of time.

You too can help put these solutions into action by joining the chapter of Million Mom March Foundation in your area, or starting one of your own. The website is full of ideas to help you get involved. Even though the gun companies seem to have all the power, together we are stronger. Remember what Rosie said in her speech, "They say we cannot defeat the gun lobby. They are wrong. We will. We must!"
